DR1 is the first television channel in Denmark, originally known as Danmarks Radio or DR. It was launched by the media house of the same name and has since been referred to as 1eren in everyday speech after TV 2 began broadcasting in 1988.In 1996, DR launched its second TV channel, DR2, prompting a change of name for their original station to DR1. Since then it has become one of the most popular channels on Danish television with viewers able to watch live tv streams from anywhere around the world.
The programming on offer at DR1 includes news bulletins, documentaries and dramas along with some of Denmark's most popular shows such as 'Borgen', 'Forbrydelsen' (The Killing) and 'Livvagterne' (The Protectors). The channel also broadcasts international series including House MD and CSI Miami alongside classic films like Casablanca.
DR1 also offers educational programmes for children such as Bamses Billedbog which teaches basic numeracy skills through stories featuring Bamse - a beloved character from Danish culture - who is joined by his friends Kylling (Chicken), Mus (Mouse) and Ælling (Duckling).
Aside from entertainment content, viewers can tune into debates between political parties during election periods while sports fans can catch up on highlights from major sporting events across Europe including football matches from England’s Premier League or Germany’s Bundesliga.
