WRIC-TV, virtual channel 8 is the ABC-affiliated television station for the Richmond, Virginia market. It is owned by Richmond-based Media General and serves as one of its two flagship stations. WRIC ABC 8News offers viewers in Central Virginia a variety of news and entertainment programming on its live TV stream.

The station was founded in 1955 by The E.W. Scripps Company as WXEX-TV, broadcasting on UHF channel 15 from studios located at 25th Street and West Broad Street in downtown Richmond; it was the first independent television station to sign on in the state of Virginia (the other being WSLS-TV [channel 10] in Roanoke). In 1957, WXEX changed its call letters to WRVA-TV after Scripps sold off most of its radio holdings that year; at that time, it moved into new facilities located near Byrd Park (on South Boulevard) which had been constructed for WRVA radio (1140 AM).

In 1968, WRVA-TV became an ABC affiliate after WHSV-TV (channel 3) in Harrisonburg dropped the network to become an NBC affiliate; prior to this switchover, both networks were shared with WWBT (channel 12). During this period from 1968 until 1982 when it switched back to NBC fulltime), WHSV aired select ABC programs while WRVA served as a secondary affiliate airing some shows not seen on WHSV or WWBT during certain timeslots throughout each weeknight's prime time lineup.
